Random question for oppo. My ex-roommate owns an XJ Cherokee very similar to the one above. I own a 2003 GMC Sierra somewhat similar to the one above ( mine's an extended cab/4WD). Never once did he refer to his Jeep as anything but a truck. Never have I referred to my truck as anything but, well, a truck.
I believe that a Jeep is a Jeep and a truck is a truck. So it always irked me to hear him call the Jeep a truck.
Do you or anyone you know call a Jeep/SUV/non-truck a truck? Do you agree with the usage?

I usually just call my Grand Cherokee a Jeep. Occasionally I call it a truck. Mostly Jeep though.

A truck is a truck. A Jeep is a Jeep. Usually that rides like a truck. A "truck" can do heavy duty types of things. Most jeeps are very light duty.

Where was your roommate from? I've heard lots of people call their SUV's trucks, and all of them were from the east coast. I'm pretty sure it's a regional thing. Soda/Pop.

I called my wagoneer a truck
I called my Land Cruiser diesel a truck
Not pickup trucks, but certainly trucks to me
I did not call my Land Rover a truck though for some reason (or the Vanagon)
I would occasionally reference these as trucks though

I don't even call my Ranger a truck, it's a pickup. Trucks have lots of wheels and engines that make more torque than god, yet are still as slow as molasses running uphill in January.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:11 |

The XJ isn't a truck. Unibody construction. To me, that's what makes a truck. It's okay to call your SUV a truck as long as it's ladder frame. If you have one of these new unibody crossovers (cars with extra weight and height added because stupididy), it's not a truck regardless of how big it is.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:13 |
|
Full Frame = Truck
That's how I do it.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:13 |

My Jeep is a truck becasue it is built as a cab on frame, just like a real truck is.
A "Jeep" is a brand where as truck is a type of vehicle. I think your argument would be turck vs. SUV, but I refuse to call my Jeep an SUV as the swarm of SUVs out there now are built like cars. basically, take a shortened station wagon, and then but bigger tires and a bit more suspension on it and call it an SUV.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:14 |

If I had a Jeep it would be called a jeep. When I had an Explorer I called it a truck. Its certainly wasn;t a car and it was too much to say SUV. Then I had a Sport Trac, and well that was a truck so truck. I'd say if its body on frame its can be called a truck without someone needing to correct you. A jeeps a Jeep so y not just say Jeep. I certainly wouldn;t want ot go around sayin lets take the Crossover Utility Vehicle to dinner tonight, it would be car (Ford Escape)

I call my '97 4Runner a truck, because it is essentially a Tacoma with a fully boxed frame, a top over the bed and extra legroom for the rear seats.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:17 |
|
but?
unibody but it has a bed.... not a truck in your definition but it has a bed which is a defining characteristic of a truck
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:18 |

I've always called SUVs trucks. Even if they're not on a truck chassis.
Now, I call crossovers cars as well.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:18 |

So does that mean we can call Panthers trucks?
And what do you think is more important to the designation of a truck - full frame or a bed?

![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:18 |

Technically, yes, but then the only "SUVs" left would be the Jeeps, and maybe one of the Toyotas, and I think Ford still builds the Expedition / Navigator on the F250 chassis.

A Jeep is more than a truck: it's a way of life.

![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:19 |

I know in some languages, there isn't a set word for SUV, so they use the word for truck instead. So when saying it in English, it's just 'truck'.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:19 |

I wouldnt call that a truck either.Would you call a subaru baja a truck?
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:19 |

I think full-sized body-on-frame SUVs can get away with being called a trucks. Suburban, Expedition, 4Runner, ect...
But a Jeep's not quite there somehow. I reckon a Jeep's a Jeep.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:21 |
|
aren't they F-150 platforms? Isn't something from Nissian still body on frame? Yea, I think the SUV in the technical definition is dying out.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:22 |
|
Full Frame
Because I think Full Frame SUV's are just as much truck as a pickup-truck.
I mean especially when you look at say...90's Suburban/Yukons and Silverado/Sierras.
They're literally the same thing with a full body. You can even get them as 2500's.
That being said I wouldn't call it a pickup of course!
Oh, and technically I have no argument to make about a Panther Truck.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:22 |
|
It's also a Honda though, which is one of the defining characteristics of not truck. If we're going by anything with a bed being a truck, we can start playing that game with the Subaru Brat and Baja.

I call my 2-door S-10 Blazer a truck. Only really because it is a simple word to differentiate it from my roadster. And I guess its built from actual truck parts.
A Jeep is a Jeep though. Unless its a Jeep truck with a pickup bed. You could call his Jeep a wagon and be more correct.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:24 |

Maybe the better question to ask would have been, what makes a truck? A full ladder frame or a bed?
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:27 |

Part of this question comes from the fact that I just bought a '99 2-door Tahoe, and was curious as to whether I should call it a truck or not. You pretty much just solved my dilemma.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:29 |

fuck yea!
My dad had a 96 2 Door Yukon for about 12 years great trucks
yes - absolutely a truck.
1500 I assume?
Tough as nails those trucks
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:30 |

yea as weak as Honda is with its truck I'd still call it a truck. I thnk the Baja is more of a ute
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:30 |

I call my 2wd 2-door Blazer a truck. It carries things in the back and is basically a factory enclosed S10.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:30 |

i'd say either of those
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:30 |

Who cares? Call your vehicle whatever you want. Just realize everyone will think you're a moron when you call your Compass is a truck.
Aside from anyone caring, I think its OK to call any body-on-frame 4x4 and all 2WD pickups a "truck."
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:31 |
|
no thats ute. i'd say it has a bed so its a truck.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:35 |
|
yes, the cruiser is a truck. i would call the xj a truck too. the key for me is the idea that a"truck" like you have isn't soley a "truck" it's a "pickup truck". that qualifier means there are other kinds of trucks besides "pickup"
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:41 |
|
It must have a cargo box, usually open topped. A Suburban, Expedition and similar are not intended to be used as a truck so are not trucks. Most Jeeps are certainly not trucks.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:42 |
|
Thanks! And yea, definitely a 1500, but as fully loaded as a 2-door Tahoe gets in LT/Z71 trim. Did they make a 2500 2-door Tahoe/Yukon GT?
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:44 |

A great point, which brings the conversation to what is more important to the "truck" designation - body on frame construction, a bed, or both?
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:45 |

You know what I'm not positive. that would be psycho wouldn't it?
Great, now I want one.
I actually love these things. My dad bought it brand new in 96 and he got the 2 door because it saved him length, he ran a snow plow business over the winter.
His was bright red with the same black trim around it.
It sounded EPIC when he put dual flowmaster super 40's on it. Was almost deafening when pulling the boat though.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:49 |

I have known several people who called their SUV a Jeep. And I have known several people who called their truck based SUV a truck (Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade, Expedition and Excursion). For the SUV's that are based on full truck frames I do not have a problem with people calling them trucks. But it did kinda bug me when people referred to their SUV as a Jeep. What do you think about that?
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:56 |
|
I hope it doesn't exist, because if it does, I'll be forced to sell mine and search night and day until I find the 2500 2-door.
I've looked for one on and off for years, and finally came across this one that has all the options...push button 4WD, leather, sport package (gray trim/red bowtie). The only thing that I'm kind of meh about is the color...would've much preferred dark gray, but I couldn't pass up on how ridiculously clean this thing is.
I've been listening to Youtube clips of exhausts...the Flowmaster does sound great, but I know they're known for their droning. But this isn't exactly the most practical vehicle, so why should the exhaust be?
![]() 10/23/2014 at 15:59 |

He has flowmaster 50's on his silverado which he bought to replace the Yukon in 2010 (brand new 09 model) much, much better suited for him. Loud but not deafening when towing. It's nice to be able to have a conversation with a big boat hooked up.
Just don't get the Super 44's I have on my Montego, you won't be able to have a conversation with NOTHING hooked to the back of it.
Off to the googles to find a 2 door 2500 (if they exist).
You're truck sounds awesome man, great find, looks nice. You going to do a whole write up of it for us? More pics. More details.

I only have two major categories, "trucks" and "cars". For me, it's only a truck if there is an area/cab for the driver and passenger(s), separated from another area, enclosed or not, for cargo. By separated, I mean you can't realistically/practically/directly walk/crouch/crawl between the People Area and the Cargo Area. So, an Avalanche would be a truck in my terms, as would the Cadillac Escalade EXT (an abomination of a truck, but a truck nonetheless). The Subaru Baja? Truck. Tiny, odd, Subaru truck, but still a truck (same deal with the Brat or the Luv). XJs, 4Runners, CRVs, Pilots, Montero's, Explorers, Suburbans, Cherokees, Wagoneers, TravelAlls, Scouts, Expeditions, Navigators, Mariners, and Excursions are all cars. Vans like an Econoline or RamVan are subtypes of cars. Box trucks are sub types of trucks. Trucks with camper tops are still trucks. SUVs, CUVs, Jeeps, Navigators, Durangos, X5s, X3s, Liberty's, Patriots, Compasses, FJs, Landcruisers, sedans, hatches, coupes, roadsters, and sports cars, are all sub-types of cars.
Works for me, anyway. I've heard all kinds of things from other people. Hell, some people name their cars and trucks, or call them "her", which has always creeped me out, but whatever does it for them, I suppose. No harm, no foul.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 16:05 |

I hadn't considered that, but could certainly do that. It's currently en-route from Seattle to Tucson...I flew up about a month back to do all the maintenance (ALL OF IT) including a fuel pump swap to make sure it'd make the drive. My pops is driving it down, so I wanted to make sure it was road worthy...I have a shiny '08 Magnum R/T waiting for him to return home in.
Will definitely post more pics once i'm fully in possession and have a chance to comb through it more thoroughly. But I do feel that a 6" lift is in the future.

I call my wife's SUV a truck. Sure it's a unibody, but who gives a damn.
Wrangler = Jeep. Cherokee = truck. Willy's jeep thing = Jeep.
Got in a new MDX the other day and I think it's a car, not a truck.

I've had friends with Wranglers and my neighbors have one now, it's not for me but I get it. It's a fun feeling, like you are doing something wild and crazy and all risky just by driving it. I balanced the tires for them so it's not a total highway deathtrap, the newer ones can actually go 70 without spontaneously combusting, but man what a touchy ride!

![]() 10/23/2014 at 16:16 |

I relish the challenge of the daily climb in and out :D
I'm not really a Jeep person (been there, done that, not my way of life), so I want to build this thing to be as much of a dedicated off-road vehicle as I'll ever have, without going overboard...still want to be able to drive it on the freeway without fear of death. Once I have it and have a chance to drive it, I'll make a better assessment of what direction I want to go with it. But 6" of lift with 35"s is what I'm shooting for in my mind as of now.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 16:17 |

Speaking strictly about light trucks as they come from the dealer, and not commercial vehicles, it would have to have a frame. Take El Camino/Ranchero type of vehicle. I have never heard anyone call them trucks even though the early ones did have frames. So, I would say payload capacity should be a factor, too. Definitely a bed even if taken off for a different body.
Just cause you can put 15 bags of Quikrete in your Excursion, it is not the same as going to the gravel yard and having a loader dump 2000+ lbs of sand mix in the bed. IMO.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 16:18 |

I would call it a "truck" if you can tow heavy things with it. A Jeep has a full frame, but other than the Grand Cherokee, most of them are too short or light to do any serious towing with. That's why I'm okay calling heavy duty SUV's "trucks". And my '73 Buick...
![]() 10/23/2014 at 16:21 |

Exactly, that's how we do it here as well. Only vehicles like the Scania in your first picture are called truck here. Those pickups are just that, pickups, not trucks. Regardless if it has a frame or not. It's a cultural difference I guess.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 16:37 |

My '01 Range Rover is a truck. Full frame of battlecruiser size, with a mostly aluminum shed bolted on top.
So body on frame is a truck. I would still call an XJ Cherokee a truck, even though it is technically unibody, but it is really a unibody with frame rails welded on, as were the Grand Cherokees of that era.
![]() 10/23/2014 at 16:45 |

XJ= Unibody=not a truck. 4Runner=Fully Boxed Frame(That's right circa 2007 Ford F150)=Truck.

My one roommate called his Durango a truck. So my other roommates would make fun of him for it. They started referring to their own vehicles as trucks (they owned a Dodge Neon, and a Ford Focus) when he would ask them to move their cars out of the driveway.
Poor Example:
Kid with Durango: "Hey Kyle, can you move your car?"
Kyle: "It's a truck dude. Just like your Durango."
-Now Kyle has a Ford Ranger and he calls it a Bus, and it's hilarious.

HOWEVER, I've never called my Cherokees trucks. Just a Jeep.

This. My old-ass explorer is a truck because it was built on a truck chassis and has a truck front end (as opposed to a van built on a truck chassis). But if I bought a new explorer, it would not be a truck thanks to its' bullshit unibody construction.
![]() 10/24/2014 at 02:14 |

I don't mind if people call their car a truck when they're talking. My mom had an Isuzu Rodeo and now she has a Forester. That's "the truck," and the stepdad's Corolla was "the wagon." My dad has a Sienna. That's "the van," and the stepmom's ML320 was "the truck." That's fine because it's an easy way to differentiate multiple cars without having to use the whole model name.
The thing that does bother me is when people get truck plates on vehicles that are not trucks. I'm not sure if every state does this, but here in Wisconsin pickup trucks and cargo vans (there's specific rules based on how much of the vehicle is devoted to cargo space full-time) have to get a license plate that says "TRUCK" on it in little tiny letters, and has a different number format. There's also a letter for the weight class. Rangers would be A, cargo vans are probably B, full-size trucks should be C, etc. There isn't any monitoring of this so you see plenty of F150s and Tundras with A plates. However, it really gets my goat when I see a Tahoe, Suburban, Subaru Forester, Town & Country, Grand Caravan, or even a FUCKING PT CRUISER with one of these license plates. These idiots are paying a little more every year (a lot more if it's not an A plate) just so they can drive around with the word "TRUCK" on the back of their PT Cruiser and feel a little more like a man.

Weren't Jeep the first to build a car on a small truck chassis - the Cherokee , in the 80's - thereby avoiding the car sales tax of that generation? (cause its a truck, not a car)
So yeah, pretty sure its the chassis design & nothing else that makes it a truck or not. That said of Jeeps, only Cherokee & Grand Cherokee would qualify. So I'd say a Wrangler is a Jeep & a GC is both, so you can't knock the man for using either.

It can both definition by construction or by feel of the driver.. To me both the Jeep XJ and TJ(both I own as examples) are trucks. They feel like the pick up trucks I grew up with, without the cargo box. I have ridden in other SUV's and they felt more like cars than the pick up trucks I grew up with.. That is how I make the designation. Your criteria may differ..

Well I hoped the definition would help but you need to define large and heavy. I drive a Jeep GC and some people call it a truck but I personally don't. I call it a Jeep which unfortunately is also not helpful because then people just picture a Wrangler.

a large, heavy motor vehicle used for transporting goods, materials, or troops

I drive an R50 Pathfinder with part time 4x4, I call it a truck.

I refer to my wife's Suburban as a truck simply because I don't like calling it a car, and "EssYouVee" is too clumsy to say in casual conversation (i.e. "do you need gas in your truck?")
